Precipitation in Al-alloys
Small Angle Scattering techniques (X-rays or neutrons) allow for a fast, reliable, non destructive quantification of precipitate nanostructures. They are particularly well suited to in-situ studies, giving access to the kinetics of precipitation reactions. Examples will be given in Aluminium alloys and steels to show how the experimentally obtained precipitation kinetics can provide measurements of the parameters of thermo-kinetic models, and how the quantification of precipitate parameters help improve precipitation strengthening models. The second part of the talk will be devoted to mapping by SAXS of precipitation nanostructures in heterogeneous materials such as friction stir welds. It will be shown that microstructure maps give access to an in-depth understanding of the position-sensitive evolutions of the precipitates during welding and during post-welding heat treatments.
