High accuracy determination of carbon content in steel by FE-EPMA

For the development of a steel with a tensile strength of 1.5GPa and elongation of 20% (TS:1.5GPa-EL:20% steel; ISMA target), FE-EPMA based carbon analyzer was developed, which can quantitatively analyze carbon content in ferrite and austenite on a meso to micro scopic scale, by suppressing contamination especially by means of sample heating to 100C. Carbon partitioning behavior during austenite to ferrite transformation detected by carbon analyzer showed good agreement with that simulated by DICTRA software.
