Bárbara Bellón wins Acta Student Award

July 25, 2022

Dr. Bárbara Bellón, postdoctoral researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) has been awarded the Acta Student Award 2022. Her paper “Multiscale prediction of microstructure length scales in metallic alloy casting” has been chosen by the editorial board of the journal Acta Materialia. The board not only considered Bellón’s paper, which demonstrated exceptional value to the materials community, but her personal credentials and recommendations, too.

Microstructural features that develop during solidification are essential for the material’s properties, performance and post-processing. Bárbara Bellón and her colleagues combine casting experiments and quantitative simulations to present a novel multiscale modelling approach to predict local primary dendritic spacings in metals relevant to industrial casting processes.

The award is endowed with 2000$ and the opportunity to present a poster at the Acta Symposium during the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society meeting 2023 in San Diego. In total 16 researchers were awarded, four in every field of Acta publications, namely Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia, Acta BioMaterialia and Materialia.
