Professor Dierk Raabe elected to the National Academy of Engineering Class of 2025

The United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected Professor Dierk Raabe, director at the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials (MPI-SusMat), as a member of its 2025 class. This prestigious honour recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to engineering research, practice, and education.
“I am deeply honoured to join the NAE alongside such outstanding colleagues,” says Raabe. “Materials science and engineering are undergoing the biggest transformation in centuries. We must rethink how we produce, use, and recycle materials - balancing sustainability with economic efficiency. The NAE provides an invaluable platform to collaborate with brilliant minds tackling these challenges.”
Founded in 1964, the NAE unites leading engineers from academia, industry, and government to advise on federal policies, improve government programs and enhance public understanding of critical issues.
At MPI-SusMat, Raabe leads the Microstructure Physics and Alloy Design department, focusing on sustainable materials production, usage, and recycling through advanced microscopy and simulation techniques.
