Best Paper Award for Max Planck scientists
Benedikt Distl, Leonie Gomell, Angelika Gedsun and Frank Stein are awarded for their paper on alloy phase diagrams
The Alloy Phase Diagram International Commission (APDIC) awarded Benedikt Distl, Leonie Gomell, Angelika Gedsun and Frank Stein, researchers at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung, and three colleagues from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the RWTH Aachen University, the APDIC Best Paper Award 2022 for the best published manuscript on alloy phase diagram data in 2021. The committee honours excellence in scientific publishing and the industrial application of phase diagrams and thermodynamic calculations. The awarded paper gives a comprehensive assessment of the existing literature about ternary alloys based on aluminium, molybdenum and titanium. Alloys based on this system are well known for their high strength, good corrosion-resistance and low density, and are therefore widely used in industrial applications for example in the automotive and aerospace industry.
The award is announced and conferred at the annual Calphad meeting and in print in the journals Calphad and Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion. The award is endowed with 1000$ and a certificate.
