Low-carbon Ironmaking & Hydrogen Metallurgy to Achieve Carbon Neutrality

China's steel industry has experienced rapid development since the founding of the People's Republic of China, but it is in urgent need of seeking changes in the context of a new era of carbon neutrality. The annual CO2 emissions of the steel industry accounted for 6.7% of the total global carbon emissions, while in China this ratio reached 15%. As the manufacturing industry with the highest carbon emissions in China, the steel industry will find its own way out under the coordination of external policy supervision and internal technological breakthroughs.

Using hydrogen instead of carbon as a reducing agent has great advantages in both thermodynamics and kinetics. This lecture introduces the future potential of low hydrocarbon metallurgy development from a theoretical perspective, and summarizes the latest developments in the current field of research. Then the current typical low-carbon ironmaking processes including CSDRI, Ouye, CISP, Hyl, etc., are introduced, evaluated and compared.
