Novel magnetic functionalities in classic materials
Heusler compounds and ternary carbides have been known since the beginning of the last century. Their physical properties have been studied over a wide range of compositions and are in generally well understood. Nevertheless, surprising new magnetic properties have been discovered recently: A) the so called “shell ferromagnetism” in selected Heuslers which results in a quasi-monopole like magnetic behavior and B) the so called “MAX phases” where “M” stands for a 3d/4d, “A” for a group IV element and “X” for carbon (or nitrogen) which in the exemplary case of Mn2GaC show an exceptionally large (10-4) magnetostriction. These surprising magnetic properties will be discussed in relation to the elemental and phase distribution in these materials.
