Experimental studies of phase formation and microstructure development upon non-equilibrium solidification.
Understanding of the structure and phase formation upon solidification of metallic alloys is crucial for development of new materials with tailored microstructure and properties. In this talk, a brief overview of the experimental techniques for the ex-situ and in-situ studies of non-equilibrium solidification at IFW Dresden will be given. Examples of the studies of phase selection in undercooled metallic melts using high speed video observation and in-situ X-ray diffraction as well as investigations of heterogeneous nucleation and microstructure development upon inoculation will be presented.
