Equipment and Facilities

The experimental facilities at the Department offer a large variety of surface analytical techniques such as TOF-SIMS, ESCA, SAM, LEED or SNMS as well as optical spectroscopies such as FT-Raman microscopy, FT-IR microscopy, surface plasmon spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry.

In addition, nanoscopic techniques such as STM, AFM, SKP-FM and microscopic analysis from laser confocal microscopy as well as environmental FE- SEM with an integrated high temperature reaction chamber are readily available within the facility. Diffraction methods such as X-ray diffraction within corrosive atmospheres at high temperatures and X-ray reflectometry as well as the analysis of chemical and electrochemical reaction kinetics at high temperatures, in aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes and in molten salts are on-going topic of research and method development within the department.

A variety of different surface preparation techniques are available, ranging from CVD/PVD to plasma reactions, Pulsed Laser Deposition, Sputtering Techniques and molecular beam epitaxy to self-assembly and Langmuir-Blodgett techniques.

The department runs a service analytical group offering the following services (external and internal): UV-/VIS-Spectroscopy, Flame-/Hydride- Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Optical Emission Spectroscopy with Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and Steel analysis with C/S-Analyser / O/N-Analyser / H-Analyser. Our department develops novel and newly combined techniques such as the scanning Kelvin probe to analyse buried metal/polymer interfaces, or the in-situ combination of ICP-MS and the Scanning Flow Cell.
