MPIE secures first place in Engineering Sciences in Humboldt Rankings

November 20, 2023

In the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's ranking, the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) took first place among non-university research institutions in the field of engineering sciences. Moreover, it has clinched the second spot among non-university research institutions across all disciplines. The Humboldt Foundation sponsors outstanding international researchers by providing fellowships at research institutions in Germany. According to the Foundation, securing a top place in the Rankings underscores the global standing of an institute. As Humboldt fellows are free to choose their host institution based on its credentials and international reputation, the rankings exemplify the attractiveness of German research institutions for the most brilliant minds worldwide.

MPIE previously attained the top position in 2020 and 2017, securing the second place in 2014, just behind the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces. The Humboldt ranking hinges on the number of scientists who have received a Humboldt Research Fellowship and have conducted their research at a German institution over the past five years.

Approximately 350 individuals are employed at MPIE, with around two-thirds being scientists coming from over 35 countries.
