Selase Torkornoo wins Poster Award at Bioceramics 33 conference
Selase Torkornoo, PhD researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) and RWTH Aachen University was awarded by the Journal of Materials Chemistry B for her poster presented at the Bioceramics 33 conference in Solothurn, Switzerland. The poster titled “Optimizing Parameters for Atom Probe Tomography Analysis of β-Tricalcium Phosphates” displays efforts to analyze these tricalcium phosphates and improve the accuracy of compositional analysis using atom probe tomography.
“I’m super happy to win this poster award, especially as this is one of the first conferences I visited during my PhD studies”, says Torkornoo. β-Tricalcium phosphates are some of the most used and potent materials for synthetic bone graft. Their properties make them a scaffold to facilitate natural bone growth as well as stimulating the formation of new bone. However, the use of these phosphates is still limited as their physio-chemical properties and the influence of impurities is still not fully understood. Torkornoo is using atom probe tomography and aims to improve nanoscale composition mapping techniques. Her research will help to understand how physio-chemical properties and impurities influence ß-Tricalcium phosphates thus enhance their medical application.
Torkornoo received her bachelor degree in nanomedicine engineering from the University of Virginia in the USA and her master degree in materials science & engineering from the University of Leeds (UK). Prior to joining MPIE in 2022, she worked in industry at multiple semiconductor and display equipment companies, developing surface treatments and thin film coatings.
The Bioceramics 33 conference took place in October 2023 in Solothurn, Switzerland. The conference is the annual meeting of the International Society for Ceramics in Medicine (ISCM). It aims to bring scientists, industry representatives, and clinicians from all over the world together. They share and discuss latest developments on topics of orthopedic, dental and soft tissue applications.
