Nitriding induced microstructural transformations in iron-based alloys

Nitriding induced microstructural transformations in iron-based alloys

Investigation of internal nitrides development upon nitriding of iron-based alloys is essential for optimized utilization of the nitriding treatment to enhance the surface properties of steel components. Such studies also provide a more general insight into the thermodynamics and kinetics of precipitation reactions in solids which knowledge is of cardinal importance in precipitation hardening of metal alloys. This talk presents some peculiar microstructural transformations which were witnessed during our studies on nitrides development in iron-based alloys. The experimental observations and their interpretation for the following topics will be presented: AlN precipitation starting from grain centers and progressing towards grain boundaries, duplex microstructures development in nitrided Fe-Mn alloys, octapod-shaped amorphous Si-nitride particles development in nitrided Fe-Si alloys, ferrite-matrix lattice expansion upon misfitting precipitates development, influence of dissolved allying elements on the formation of iron-nitrides on iron-based alloy substrates and the dependence of nitriding rate on the crystallographic orientation of the surface grains of the substrates.
