Behind the scenes of an international research institute: Girls' and Boys' Day on April 27

March 03, 2023

The Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) offers insights into the work of a management assistant , an electronics technician or a researcher during the national Girls' & Boys' Day on April 27.

Boys will get a glimpse of the administration behind the science. This is where everyday scientific life is made possible. What needs to be done so that scientists from all over the world can come to the institute and work here? Join us and get to know researchers from all over the world.

Girls will adopt the role of a female scientist and address one of the most pressing questions of our time: How do we produce environmentally friendly energy to combat climate change? In a do-it-yourself experiment, you will produce environmentally friendly hydrogen through water electrolysis and use it to generate electricity.

But there is also plenty to discover apart from science: In the electronics lab, you will build the devices we need to understand the world. As an electronics technician, you will solder and program your own microcontroller - a nice souvenir to take home and remember the day at MPIE.

Girls' Day and Boys' Day is a nationwide career orientation day that gives school children the opportunity to gain an insight into professions in which their gender is underrepresented. Boys' Day for example gives boys the opportunity to learn about nursing or educational professions. Girls get an insight into crafts, science and technology. The goal is to enable career and study choices free of gender roles and stereotypes. Furthermore, workshops are offered that educate about gender-specific expectations and stereotypes.
