March 01, 2018

On Tuesday, the 27th of February 2018, Marion Hörsken, head of the department “Industry, Innovation and Environment” of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Düsseldorf, awarded the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) for outstanding services in the education of young talents and on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the institute. “The promotion of young people in research and apprenticeship is of particular importance to the institute, thus this award is a special honour to us. We hope that we can further strengthen the scientific network of the Düsseldorf area together with the Chamber of Commerce and our partners from research and industry”, said Dr. Kai de Weldige, head of administration at the MPIE.

The MPIE received already several awards for its excellent apprenticeship. The institute’s trainers were honoured multiple times by the Chamber of Commerce for their distinguished services and the extraordinary achievements of the apprentices were also awarded by the Chamber of Commerce as well as by the Max Planck Society.

Next to the training of young scientists, the MPIE offers apprenticeships in six different fields: In two dual study programmes, the institute trains chemical laboratory assistants for the practical work in laboratories and prepares mathematical-technical software developers for the work in software and system houses.

Furthermore, the MPIE trains IT specialists for the labour market in the IT sector and offers an apprenticeship for materials testers, which combines the practical use of machines with analytical work, e.g. the measurement and analysis of different materials properties.

In an extensive commercial training, the apprentices learn diverse administrative functions and have the opportunity to start a career, e.g. as assistant to the management or in secretary’s offices afterwards.

In the area of handicraft, the MPIE offers an apprenticeship for industrial mechanics, which provides the graduates with the skills to enter professional life in companies of nearly every industrial branch.
