Best Poster Awards at the AAMS 2019

Priyanshu Bajaj and Avinash Hariharan, PhD students in the department “Microstructure Physics and Alloy Design” won two poster prizes at the "Alloys for Additive Manufacturing Symposium 2019" (AAMS) in Gothenburg, Sweden. The event focused on powder based metal additive manufacturing technologies.
Avinash Hariharan won the First Prize for his poster on "Mechanisms contributing to solidification cracking during laser powder bed fusion of Inconel-738LC". He presented his results on the influence of grain boundary chemistry and microstructure-scale stresses on the solidification cracking mechanisms using atom probe tomography and focused ion beam-digital image correlation technique.
His colleague Priyanshu Bajaj was honoured for his poster on "Intrinsic heat-treatment in Al-Sc alloys during laser metal deposition-driving factors, kinetics and impurities". He won the Second Poster Prize and presented his work on developing new alloys for laser additive manufacturing. His idea is to use the non-linear thermal profile experienced during the additive manufacturing process as in situ heat treatment to harden the component. This approach is similar to the technique used in industry for conventional manufacturing of micro-alloyed steel components.
