Night of Science in Düsseldorf, 13 September 2019

MPIE participates with KopfSalat, interactive booth and science slam

September 03, 2019

The third Düsseldorf Night of Science - and we are part of it! The MPIE is taking part in this year's event with three activities:

5.00 - 5.45 pm: Crystals in Colours - An Insight into the Interior of Metalls

Why does the turbine blade of an aircraft engine withstand the enormous mechanical and temperature stresses during a flight? Why does stainless steel sometimes rust? How is it possible that a steel wire of only 3 mm diameter can hold the weight of an entire car? How can you make a wire that conducts electricity without resistance? One key to answering these questions is the fact that metallic materials consist of many crystals that have grown together firmly. Light and electron microscopes can be used to study this crystal structure, often using colours to make the different crystals and their inner structure visible. We explain what crystals are, how they determine the properties of metals and how colours help to better understand the behaviour of metals.

5.00 pm - 12.00 am: 3D printing, Spectroscopy and the Human Tensile Testing Machine

The busts of Planck and Einstein shimmer in red plastic. Next to them is a construction with a flashlight, colourful glasses and a broken DVD - what do these objects have in common? How can 3D printing and spectroscopy be associated with them? And what is a human tensile testing machine? The Max Planck scientists show how real objects can be digitized and printed in minutes using a 3D scanner and 3D printer, how metallic surfaces can be examined with the help of simple everyday objects, and how metals can be tested for their properties such as strength. All these examples provide an insight into modern materials research, the innovations of which are an integral part of everyday life today.

12.00 am - 1.00 am: Think in Terms of a Casserole - The German Science Slam champion 2019, Aniruddha Dutta, at the Slam of the Night of Science

Aniruddha is a great foodie and loves to combine recipes with metal systems. The production of new metals is just like the production of delicious new recipes. This time the recipe/slam is a casserole.
