The Max Planck Society awards 20 outstanding trainees from over 80 Max Planck Institutes each year since 2007. The prize is intended as recognition for special academic achievements and social commitment during their training and is endowed with 750 euros.

In addition to supervising master's and doctoral theses, the MPIE offers six apprenticeships: Chemistry laboratory assistant, IT specialist for system integration, industrial mechanic, office management clerk, mathematically technical software developer and materials tester specializing in metal technology. The institute is recognized for its efforts in promoting trainees by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Düsseldorf and by the Max Planck Society regularly.
