American National Academy of Engineering elects materials scientist Rainer Kirchheim as a new member

Prof. Dr. Rainer Kirchheim, professor at the Institute of Materials Physics at the University of Göttingen, Germany, and external scientific member of the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung, was elected as a new member in the American National Academy of Engineering (NAE). His outstanding contributions to the thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrogen behaviour in metals and solute/defect interactions in other materials, were recognized by the members of the academy, who are the only eligible persons to elect new members. Kirchheim is one of 18 German fellows of the academy which comprises not only outstanding professors but also managers of big global players such as Bill Gates of Microsoft and Kinam Kim of Samsung.

The academy is a non-profit, non-governmental organization which tries to find solutions for the big technological challenges of our time like the production of sustainable and renewable energy.
