New Max-Planck research group

Prof. Gunther Eggeler, head of the department for material science of the Ruhr-University Bochum is now also the head of the new Max-Planck-Research group “High temperature Materials”. The research group originated from the Max-Planck-Fellowgroup, which existed since 2010, working on phase development during reactions of steel and aluminium melts, discrete shifting simulations in realistic microstructures and especially the nucleation of laves phase particles in tempered martensitic chromium steels. Since Fellowgroups last for five years, the Fellowgroup was changed into a research group, so the projects could go on. The researchgroup will be free to choose their own research topics. In terms of organization, the research group is assigned to the department for “Structure and Nano-/ Micromechanics of Materials” managed by Prof. Gerhard Dehm due to the shared interest in the elemental processes of plastic deformation and the study of these processes via transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore the cooperation with the research group of Prof. Dierk Raabe is going to be not only continued but even intensified.

The formal bonding of the MPG-Fellowgroup also enhanced other joint activities such as the cooperation between the MPIE and the Ruhr-University Bochum within the international Max-Planck research school SurMat. This international research school received good evaluations in 2014 and was first thought of by Martin Straatmann, current president of the Max-Planck-Society, and Gunther Eggeler.
