Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The Ruhr‐Universität (RUB) was founded in 1965 and is located in Bochum.

Materials related research has always been a research stronghold at RUB and represents one of its priority research fields. Material scientists from all engineering and science disciplines collaborate and share research equipment co-ordinated by RUB’s Materials Research Department (MRD). The MRD promotes a materials research approach that bridges length scales from the nanocosmos up to the component level. Understanding materials properties on the level of the relevant length scale is the scientific objective of RUB’s materials researchers.

The research building ZGH (German abbreviation for Center for Interface-Dominated High-Performance Materials) provides research space and an excellent research infrastructure with high end research equipment and support by technical and scientific staff. The core facilities include 3D atom probe tomography, analytical electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), micro mechanical test equipment and thin film clean room laboratories as well as a computer cluster for scale bridging modelling.

Several chairs of four faculties are linked to the IMPRS SusMet:

  • Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
  • Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • Faculty of Physics and Astronomy
  • Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology

In addition, the Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS), located at the Ruhr-Universität is a strong cooperation partner of the IMPRS SusMet.
