Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung

The Max‐Planck‐Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH (MPIE) was founded in 1917 and is located in Düsseldorf.

The MPIE is investigating the chemical dynamics, structure and transformations of metallic alloys as well as semiconducting materials.

All research departments participate in the IMPRS SusMet

  • Microstructure Physics and Alloy Design (Prof. Dierk Raabe)
  • Structure and Nano-/Micromechanics of Materials (Prof. Gerhard Dehm)
  • Interface Chemistry and Surface Engineering (Prof. Martin Stratmann, Scientific Coordinator Dr. Michael Rohwerder)
  • Computational Materials Design (Prof. Jörg Neugebauer)

as well as the independent research group for Nanoanalytics and Interfaces (Prof. Tina Scheu).

Spearheading correlated experimental and simulation techniques, buried interfaces and defects can be accurately analysed, monitored and modelled in space and time down to the atomic and electronic scales. These correlated techniques such as, e.g. APT, FIM, EBIC, EBSD, TEM, Kelvin probe microscopy, first principles and multi-scale modelling and machine learning, are central to understand novel metallurgical synthesis processes as well as the atomistic to mesoscale structure and dynamics of reactants, intermediates and products.
