Postdoctoral Researcher in Data Analytics in BIGmax - the Max Planck Research Network on Big-Data-Driven Materials Science

Job Offer from July 23, 2018

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher or software engineer with a strong expertise in both experimental materials science and data handling to support BiGmax scientists at the various participating Max Planck Institutes with handling the steadily growing amount of experimental data.

BiGmax is a network of the Max Planck Society (https://www.mpg.de/en) aiming at exploiting the potentials of data-driven materials science. The BiGmax scientists from more than 10 different Max Planck institutions cover a significant breadth in research areas and the envisioned synergy will enable them and their institutes to develop novel, domain-specific and property-specific methods. More about BiGmax can be found here:  https://bigmax.iwww.mpg.de/ (under development)

Job description: You will serve as a contact point for experimental BiGmax scientists to support them on tackling the “4 Vs” challenges of their materials-science related big data (volume, variety, velocity, and veracity). On the one hand this will be a consulting role, on the other hand you will be actively involved in solving acute problems of data handling and analysis of specific experiments. Thus, your work environment will be multifaceted and you will get the opportunity to work on various different exciting cutting edge research problems. This will also enable you to identify possible unused synergies inside the BiGmax network. Consequentially, bringing together potential collaboration partners will also be considered as one of your work tasks.

Requirements: You should either be a software engineer with strong experience in materials science, or a physicist with focus on experimental materials science with a strong background in data handling.

Depending on specialization, the position will be at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH in Düsseldorf or the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam-Golm. Initially, you will receive a contract (TVöD) for two years. A prolongation is possible.

Please send your application material, including a motivation letter, CV, and contact-details of at least two references as one pdf-file to . Review of applications will end when a suitable candidate is found.
