Dierk Raabe appointed Honorary Doctor at Norwegian University of Science and Technology

December 16, 2022

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) honoured Prof. Dierk Raabe, director at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE), with an honorary doctorate. The title recognizes Raabe’s achievements in the field of sustainable metallurgy and alloy design. The appointment also aims at fostering the collaboration between NTNU and MPIE.

Dierk Raabe works in the fields of materials simulation, atom probe tomography, microstructures and the resulting mechanical properties of metallic alloys. He combines thermomechanical material processing, simulation and characterization at the atomic level. The aim is the physically-based design of materials with superior properties (strength, elongation, damage tolerance) for the fields of energy, mobility and health from the atomic to the macro-scale under consideration of synthesis and processing. In recent years, Raabe has also taken a strong interest in how materials science and technology can contribute to the development of more sustainable metal production and sustainable metal-based materials and products.

In 2004, Raabe received the Leibniz Award, the highest German research award. He also received two Advanced Grants of the European Research Council, the recent one in 2022 for fostering his research on the sustainable production of steel.
