First virtual International Thermoelectric Conference (VCT 2020) – a full success

July 27, 2020

Dr. Lamya Abdellaoui, postdoctoral researcher in the group "Nanoanalytics and Interfaces", and her IT team of the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) and the GWDG, the service organization for data and IT support of the Max Planck Society and the University Göttingen, successfully managed to host the first virtual International Thermoelectric Conference with about 1000 participants. Tanja Sondermann, Berthold Beckschäfer, Achim Kuhl (MPIE) and See-Ling Wong (GWDG) supported her on all matters concerning establishing the zoom conference, sharing presentations and giving talks.

The conference comprised over 300 talks and 100 posters from students and postdoctoral researchers in the USA & Canada, Europe, and Asia & Australia. The organization team had to set up a program scheduled over 12 time zones to match the global scale of this event. The participants had the chance to attend talks about chalcogenides, theory and modelling, nanomaterials and organic materials, oxides and novel materials in the field of thermoelectrics.

The “International Conference on Thermoelectrics”, VCT 2020, is the biggest conference on thermoelectrics taking place every year on a different continent. This year it was supposed to be held in Seattle, USA. Due to the measurements taken to constrain the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was held online from June 21-23, allowing international scientists to share their latest research results.
